“Kid books…grown up books…that’s just marketing. Books are books!”
- I can’t begin to tell you how much I love that bit. It took something I’ve been thinking for a while now and have tried to explain many times in a garbled mess, and distilled it perfectly. From this great two pager in the New Yorker by Maurice Sendak and Art Spiegelman, In the Dumps.
Same-sex couples have been getting married all around us for decades, and they’ll keep on doing it, whether you manage to hold the line or not: men will kiss their husbands as you write your brave polemics; wives will continue to feed each other cake, whatever you think is right. They’ve always had the love and the cherish and the honor, and the recognition of their friends and family, and nothing you can do will take that from them. Nothing. All you can manage is to rewrite the tax code. Make it more of a grinding hassle to deal with insurance and wills. Keep loving families apart at times of illness and accident and death. Condemn children to needless, nightmarish legal quagmires. For this you would tarnish the rings on our fingers, and turn our vows into ashes.

Choose Our Next Book!
Ok, so this week we’re doing something different. We want to do a kid’s book that doesn’t relate to Captain Dan for a change. (We’re not abandoning Captain Dan or his merry crew or monstrous scallywags, don’t fret) Ashlie has 2 awesome concepts for books, but alas I can only work on one at a time. SO! We’re turning to our minions (you lot) to choose.
Here’s how this will work: I’m going to post some preview art from both stories here and everywhere. What you’ll do is go to my FB page and vote for whichever one you want to see first! Easy-peasy!
First up: A really cute story about an as-yet-unnamed kid gets turned into an alien! What adventures will he have? Will he stay an alien forever? Only one way to find out!
Second up, we have a cute little story about Kevin, a small child who also just happens to be a zombie! Kevin wakes up hungry one day and embarks on a journey of discovery… and of breakfast!
So there you have it! Now, all you have to do is go to the FB page and VOTE! Tell your friends to vote! Have your kids (if you have them) vote! We’ll leave the voting up for a few days. The character with the most votes by Tuesday, 4/24, will be declared the winner and will be the first book made. Yay! It’s all in your hands, minions; don’t let me down! :)
Talk to you next week, when I will talk about Stumptown Comics Fest.
